HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR POSSUM AND MERINO
Always hand wash. Gently wash garments in cold water or lukewarm water with liquid wool wash.
Rinse well after washing. A washing machine can be used to gently spin away any excess water before air-drying.
Ensure all zips are closed and lay flat to dry. Do not hang to dry. Avoid direct sunlight.
Fold to store. Do not hang as this can cause stretching and hanger marks.
POSSUM FUR AND MERINO WOOL BENEFITS
Possum fur is beautiful and soft to the touch. It is the ultimate in luxury when used to create fashion wear garments.
Possum and Merino is a luxurious and uniquely New Zealand yarn made from the blending of two of our natural finest fibres – Possum fur and superfine Merino wool. Each Possum fibre is hollow and thus gives excellent insulation whilst ensuring that the garments are lightweight and very soft. Possum fur has many health attributes also – holding its warmth and therefore assisting in blood flow. It can be helpful to people who suffer from conditions that prevent them from keeping warm, such as diabetes and Raynaud’s disease, as it holds its warmth thereby assisting with blood flow. As well as being incredibly soft and warm the yarn is strong and durable. With its superior anti-piling qualities, it wears better than cashmere or mohair.
Originally introduced from Australia in the mid 1800s, the Possums in New Zealand eat many tonnes of our forests and natural habitation each night. Therefore, our conservation groups encourage the commercial use of Possum fur fibre to help eradicate this pest and as such play an important role in the protection of New Zealand’s native fauna and flora. By buying our products you too are helping save New Zealand’s natural habitat.
UNCOMPROMISING QUALITY, FROM FIELD TO FASHION
We stand for uncompromising quality. The finest materials are carefully sourced from the fields of New Zealand - merino wool and possum fur - and combined with Mulberry silk to yield an exclusive yarn that’s lighter, stronger, warmer and more luxurious than merino or cashmere alone.
We also stand for sustainability. We use possum merino, not only because it’s incredibly warm and gloriously soft, but also because the possum is an introduced pest that destroys New Zealand’s native forests and rare birdlife.
Due to the perfect blend of merino wool, brushtail possum fur and mulberry silk, our possum merino knits provide the wearer with an unrivalled level of warmth and comfort. The blend of these amazing fibres is a massive 35% warmer than cashmere wool alone, along with being lighter than cashmere or merino wool on its own. Essentially, this is all due to the hollow nature of the brushtail possum fur.
This hollow nature traps the wearer's body heat in and holds it against their body in cold environments. Which gives possum merino the title of best natural insulator on the market while also being extremely breathable.
Both Merino wool and Brushtail possum fur wick moisture away from the body and release it into the air, giving you added comfort and helping resists odours. Because of this you can rest assured that no matter what occasion or environment you are stepping out in a McDonald garment, you will be warm, comfortable and stylish; all in one. This makes McDonald knits perfect for those chilly winter months or sunny spring days when there is still a bite in the air.
Pilling can be a problem with many natural fibres, however, when merino wool is combined with possum fur, it becomes highly pill resistant compared to cashmere.
Possum merino blends are fast becoming the gold standard in natural luxury. With a number of amazing characteristics, we believe it will not be long until possum merino stands at the top of the luxury wool market.
